رَدَّreturned السَلامَthe greeting رَسولُmessenger بَعضِsome of الناسِthe people
بِاللَهِby God قُلsay ياO طَيِّبَsweet الأَنفاسِthe breaths
The messenger of 'some people' returned the greeting.
The messenger returned the greeting of some people
For God's sake, tell me, O sweet-breathed one.
By Allah, say O you of sweet breath
رَدَّreturned السَلامَthe greeting وَذاكَand that عُنوانُa sign الرِضاapproval
بُشرايَmy glad tidings قَدindeed ذَكَرَremembered الحَبيبُthe beloved الناسيthe forgetful one
He returned the greeting, and that is a sign of favor.
The messenger returned the greeting, and that is a sign of contentment
Joy is mine! The forgetful beloved has remembered.
Good news, the beloved mentioned the people who forgot
وَفَهِمتُand I understood مِنfrom نَفسِself الرَسولِthe messenger تَعَتُّباًreproach
قَلبُheart الحَبيبِthe beloved عَلَيَّtoward me قَلبٌa heart قاسيhard
And I sensed reproach from the messenger himself:
And I understood from the soul of the messenger, reproach
The beloved's heart is a hard heart toward me.
The heart of the beloved upon me is a cruel heart
قُلsay ياO رَسولُmessenger وَماand no عَلَيكَupon you مَلامَةٌblame
هُوَit ماwhat أُكابِدُI struggle with دائِماًalways وَأُقاسيand I endure
Speak, O messenger—no blame rests on you.
Say O messenger, and you have no blame
It is what I always struggle with and endure.
That is what I constantly suffer and endure
قُلsay لِلحَبيبِto the beloved وَحَقِّby the sanctity of عَيشِكَyour life ماnot اِنتَهىended
وَلَهيmy passionate yearning عَلَيكَfor you وَلاnor اِنقَضىceased وَسواسيmy restless thoughts
Tell the beloved: by your life, there has been no end
Say to the beloved and the right of your life has not ended
to my yearning for you, nor have my restless thoughts ceased.
Woe unto you, and it did not cease my worries
كَيفَhow السَبيلُthe way إِلىto الزِيارَةِthe visit خَلوَةًin private
وَيليwoe to me مِنَfrom الرُقَباءِthe watchers وَالحُرّاسِand the guards
How can I find a way to visit in private?
How is the way to visit privately
Woe to me because of the watchers and the guards!
Woe to me from the guards and watchmen
حَقٌّa duty عَلَيَّupon me وَواجِبٌand an obligation لَكَto you أَنَّنيthat I
أَمشيI walk عَلىon عَينيmy eye إِلَيكَto you وَراسيand my head
It is my duty, and an obligation owed to you, that I
It is true upon me and a duty to you that I
walk to you on my eye and my head.
Walk on my eye to you and my head
لاnot أَشتَهيI wish for أَحَداًanyone سِوايَexcept me يَراكَsees you ياO
بَدرَfull moon السَماءِthe sky وَياand O قَضيبَbough الآسِmyrtle
I wish no one but myself to see you, O
I do not desire anyone but you sees you O
full moon of the sky, and O myrtle bough!
Full moon of the sky and O rod of the staff
وَأَنَزَّهُand I hold sacred اِسمَكَyour name أَنthat تَمُرَّpass حُروفُهُits letters
مِنout of غَيرَتيmy jealousy بِمَسامِعِto the ears of الجُلّاسِthose gathered
And I hold your name too sacred for its letters to reach
And I sanctify your name that its letters pass
—out of my jealousy—the ears of those gathered.
From my jealousy to the ears of the sitters
فَأَقولُso I say بَعضُsome of الناسِthe people عَنكَabout you كِنايَةًas a veiled reference
خَوفَfor fear of الوُشاةِthe tale-bearers وَأَنتَand you كُلَّall الناسِthe people
So I say 'some people' as a veiled reference to you,
So I say some of the people about you allusively
for fear of tale-bearers, though you are everyone.
Fearing the slanderers while you are all people
وَأَغارُand I grow jealous إِنif هَبَّblows النَسيمُthe breeze لِأَنَّهُbecause it
مُغرىًenamored بِهَزِّof swaying قَوامِكَyour figure المَيّاسِgracefully swaying
And I grow jealous if the breeze blows, for it
And I am jealous if the breeze blows because
is enamored of swaying your gracefully swaying figure.
It is infatuated with the swaying of your slender figure
وَيَروعُنيand he startles me ساقيcupbearer المُدامِthe wine إِذاwhen بَداhe appears
فَأَظُنُّso I imagine خَدَّكَyour cheek مُشرِقاًshining فيin الكاسِthe cup
And the wine-pourer startles me when he appears,
And the cupbearer scares me when he shows up
so I imagine your cheek shining in the cup.
So I think your cheek is shining in the cup
