    O master, through whose affection

both my hands have always been full,

whether you are absent from me or present—

ah, what a pair of blessings!

I trust in your affection—may I never lose

    you—in both circumstances.

The verses reached me, like gold

    refined, and silver.

The whiteness of the shield evokes for me,

in them, the whiteness of both cheeks.

And the blackness of their ink came

to mirror the blackness of both eyes.

So I kissed them once for every letter,

and was not satisfied with just two kisses.

How much comfort I have gained

from the generosity of those two palms!

You comforted my heart in separation

as much as you left my eye desolate.

So may you unite the delight of the

two for me, in two places.
