ياO راحِلاًdeparted one لَمdid not يُبقِleave لِيَfor me
يا راحِلاً لَم يُبقِ لِيَ
مِنfrom بَعدِهِafter him بِالعَيشِin living نَفعاbenefit
مِن بَعدِهِ بِالعَيشِ نَفعا
O departed one, who has left me
O you who left, leaving me
no good in life after him.
No benefit in life after you,
ضاقَتgrew narrow عَليَّupon me الأَرضُthe earth فيbecause of
ضاقَت عَليَّ الأَرضُ في
كَyou وَضِقتُand I grew distressed بِالهِجرانِbecause of separation ذَرعاcapacity to endure
كَ وَضِقتُ بِالهِجرانِ ذَرعا
The earth has closed in upon me because of
The earth grew narrow around me
you, and I can no longer bear separation.
When you left, and I was sore distressed,
وَرَعَيتُand I watched فيكَfor you النَجمَthe star ياO
وَرَعَيتُ فيكَ النَجمَ يا
مَنone who كانَused to يَحفَظُنيprotect me وَيَرعىand care
مَن كانَ يَحفَظُني وَيَرعى
And for you I have watched the star, O
I tended the star in you, O you
you who used to protect and care for me.
Who used to guard me and tend me,
أَبكيكَI weep for you بِالشِعرِwith poetry الَّذيthat
أَبكيكَ بِالشِعرِ الَّذي
قَدindeed رَقَّgrew tender حَتّىuntil صارَbecame دَمعاtears
قَد رَقَّ حَتّى صارَ دَمعا
I weep for you in verse that
I weep for you in these verses
has grown so tender that it has turned to tears.
That have grown so tender they are tears.
