أَرانيI see myself كُلَّماwhenever اِستَخبَرinquired (verb stem)
تُI (verb ending) عَنabout حالِكَyour condition لاnot تُفصِحyou speak plainly
I find that whenever I inquire
Whenever I ask after you, you do not speak plainly,
about your condition, you do not speak plainly.
And I strongly suspect this attitude will not succeed.
وَفيand in غالِبِthe prevailing part of ظَنّيmy belief أَنَّthat
هَذاthis الوَجهَthe face لاnot يُفلِحit prospers
And I strongly suspect that
You have come to praise what others would condemn,
this face will not prosper.
And to delay what you used to hasten to accomplish.
لَقَدindeed أَصبَحتَyou have become تَستَحyou deem good (first part)
سِنُ(completes 'you deem good') ماwhat غَيرُكَsomeone other than you يَستَقبِحdeems ugly
Indeed, you have come to deem good
If you do not maintain your praise, why ask about one who praises?
what others deem ugly.
How long will you continue in your error,
وَقَدand indeed أَخَّرتَyou have postponed ماwhat كُنتَyou used to
بِهِwith it مِنfrom قَبلُbefore تَستَفتِحyou begin
And you have postponed what you used
Remaining tonight as you were this morning?
to begin with before.
How long will you keep company with one who corrupts the land instead of setting it right?
إِذاif لَمnot (past negation) تَحفَظِyou memorize الحَمدَal-Hamd ('Praise')
فَلِمthen why تَسأَلُyou ask عَنabout سَبِّحSabbih ('Glorify')
If you have not memorized al-Hamd,
How long will a creature forbid you, though he cannot grant success?
then why ask about Sabbih?
By God, when will one who is not seen to succeed ever succeed?
إِلىuntil كَمhow long أَنتَyou فيin غِيِّwaywardness
كَyour (suffix) تُمسيyou are in the evening مِثلَlike ماthe way تُصبِحyou are in the morning
How long will you remain in your waywardness,
the same in the evening as you are in the morning?
وَكَمand how long تَصحَبُyou keep company with مَنone who يُفhe corrupts (first part)
سِدُ(completes 'he corrupts') فيon الأَرضِthe earth وَلاand does not يُصلِحhe sets things right
And how long will you accompany one who spreads corruption
on earth and does not set things right?
وَكَمand how often يَنهاكَhe admonishes you مَخلوقٌa creature
وَإِنand even if كانَhe does فَلاthen not يُنجِحhe succeeds
And how often a creature admonishes you,
yet even if he does, he does not succeed.
فَبِاللَهِso, by God مَتىwhen يُفلِhe prospers (first part)
حُ(completes 'he prospers') مَنone who لَيسَis not يُرىhe is seen يُفلِحhe prospers
So, by God, when will he prosper—
one who is never seen to prosper?
