لَئِنif indeed جَمَعَتناbrings us together بَعدَafter ذاthis اليَومَday خَلوَةٌa private meeting
فَليthen for me وَلَكُمand for you عَتبٌreproach هُناكَthere يَطولُlasts long
If a private meeting brings us together after today,
then you and I shall have a long exchange of reproaches there.
وَكُنتُand I was زَماناًfor a time لاnot أَقولُI say فَعَلتُمُyou did
وَلَكِنَّنيbut I مِنfrom بَعدِهاafter it سَأَقولُI shall say
And for a time I would not say, ‘You did this,’
but after that I shall say it.
لَعَمريby my life لَقَدindeed عَلَّمتُمونيyou have taught me عَليكُمُagainst you
وَإِنّيand indeed I إِذاwhen عُلِّمتُI am taught فِيَّwithin me قَبولُreceptiveness
By my life, you have indeed taught me to reproach you;
and when I am taught, I am receptive.
خَبَأتُI have stored up لَكُمfor you أَشياءَthings سَوفَshall أَقولُهاI say them
لَهاthey have جُمَلٌsentences هَذَّبتُهاI have polished them وَفُصولُand sections
I have stored up things for you that I shall say;
they have sentences I have polished, and sections.
فَوَاللَهِfor, by God ماnot يَشفيrelieves الغَليلَthe burning thirst رِسالَةٌa letter
وَلاnor يَشتَكيvoices a complaint شَكوىthe complaint of المُحِبِّthe lover رَسولُa messenger
For, by God, no letter quenches the burning thirst,
nor can a messenger voice the lover’s complaint.
وَماand not هِيَit إِلّاexcept غَيبَةٌan absence ثُمَّthen نَلتَقيwe meet
وَيَذهَبُand will pass away هَذاthis كُلُّهُall of it وَيَزولُand will vanish
It is only an absence; then we shall meet,
and all this will pass away and vanish.
وَيَستَكثِرُand deems excessive العُذّالَthe reproachers دَمعاًtears أَرَقتُهُI have shed them
وَفيand in حَقِّكُمwhat is due to you ذاكَthat الكَثيرُabundance قَليلُlittle
And the reproachers deem the tears I have shed excessive,
yet beside what you deserve, that abundance is little.
وَماand not أَناI مِمَّنamong those who يَستَعيرُborrow مَدامِعاًtears
لِيَبكيto weep بِهاwith them إِنif بانَparted عَنهُfrom him خَليلُa dear friend
And I am not one of those who borrow tears
to weep with them if a dear friend parts from him.
إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle جَرىflowed مِنfrom جَفنِthe eyelid of غَيرِيَsomeone other than me أَدمُعٌtears
جَرَتflowed مِنfrom جُفونيmy eyelids أَبحُرٌseas وَسِيولُand torrents
When tears flow from someone else’s eyelid,
seas and torrents flow from my eyelids.
وَأُقسِمُand I swear ماضاعَتhave not been wasted دُموعِيَmy tears فيكُمُfor you
وَلوeven if أَنَّthat روحيmy soul فيin الدُموعِthe tears تَسيلُflows
And I swear my tears for you have not been wasted,
even if my soul flows away in those tears.
سِوايَsomeone other than me لِأَقوالِto the words of الوُشاةِthe slanderers مُصَدِّقٌgiving credence
وَغَيرِيَand someone other than me فيin عَتبِreproaching الحَبيبِthe beloved عَجولُhasty
Others, not I, give credence to the slanderers’ words,
and others are hasty in reproaching the beloved.
سَيَندَمُwill regret بَعديafter my departure مَنwhoever يَرومُseeks قَطيعَتيsevering ties with me
وَيَذكُرُand will remember قَوليmy words وَالزَمانُand time طَويلُlong
Whoever seeks to sever ties with me will regret it after I am gone,
and remember my words—and time is long.
وَياand O عاذِليmy reproacher فيfor لَوعَتيmy burning anguish لَستُI am not سامِعاًlistening
فَكَمfor how often أَناI لاnot أُصغيlisten attentively وَأَنتَwhile you تُطيلُgo on at length
And you who reproach me for my burning anguish, I am not listening;
for how often I pay no heed while you go on at length!
إِذاif كانَis مَنthe one whom أَهواهُI love him عَنِّيَwith me راضِياًpleased
فَياthen O رَبِّmy Lord لاlet no يَرضىbe pleased عَلَيَّwith me عَذولُreproacher
If the one I love is pleased with me,
then, O my Lord, let no reproacher be pleased with me.
