O light of the fields, O song of the

Farmer in his quiet predawn hours,

Come; spring is still in the

Valley; quench your thirst before it dies.

The eyes find only the remnants

Of it, and those of its traces that have not fled:

A spreading tree by a stream shakes off the

    Shadows from itself and flings itself into its depths;

And on every playground a lush flower

That fled there from its May.

In the dreary evening, while the deserted

    Crossing and its frowning stones

Listen so intently that they almost

Make the expanse imagine itself bursting,

I watch the path whenever the

Wind blows and its ancient trees rustle,

Whenever the hills are stunned by the lament of a

Farmer pouring out to the stars his day's complaint.

He cried, 'O night!' and the sleeping echo awoke

    On the hillside, and the one beside it;

Then every hill was an echo of 'O

Night!' And the echo slept upon its lyre!

Where among them is the flutter of your white

Feet amid the grass, upon its greenness,

Like two stars that slipped free from two

Orbits, so the light roamed outside its home,

Or two white butterflies that awoke,

    Stealing nectar from its wine-seller!

In every darkness you are a drowsy

Rendezvous whose day is still waiting for it.
