Lovers say that gifts
The lovers say that gifts
Lovers say that gifts
Are love's nourishment—that is what I hear.
Are food for love, so I hear
Are the food of love, or so I hear
وانيand indeed I لأهواكI truly love you حتىto the point that لأقسوI indeed grow cruel
واني لأهواك حتى لأقسو

And I love you so much that I grow cruel
And I love you to the point of cruelty
Yet I love you until I turn harsh
In my love, and ribs bleed from it.
With my love that makes ribs bleed
In my love, till the ribs bleed

And I love you so much that meeting itself is longing,
And I love you to the point of longing
I love you until meeting feels like longing
And even the widest expanse grows narrow.
Until the vastness becomes constricted
And the widest horizon turns narrow

Would it please you what my descent buys
Does it please you what my descent buys,
To where love forbids me to go?
To where passion refuses me
Stooping to where my pride refuses to go?

For money is nothing but blood sold,
For money is but blood sold
For money is nothing but blood sold,
Like prostitutes' honor, to ward off hunger.
Like a prostitute's chastity to deter destitution
Like a harlot's honor to ward off hunger

On the cannon's pounding staircase
Upon a staircase crushed by a cannon

Nor fear that a loaf of bread will be hard to find,
No fear that bread will become scarce
No fear that bread becomes rare,
Or that you will be violated, or grow old.
That you'll be ravaged and decay
Or that you be violated, or grow old
