Your image has come to wear, from my heart,
Your image now wears, from my heart,
a robe embroidered with pure-white visions, splendidly adorned.
a robe embroidered and adorned with white visions.

You were like that deceitful bird, the one
And you were like that beguiling bird
the shepherds of lambs see swooping over the meadow:
that shepherds of lambs see swooping down in the meadow.

they race through grass and flowers toward it,
So they run toward it through the grass and flowers,
but if shepherds draw near it, it flies off, exultant and singing.
and if shepherds approach it, it flies off, jubilant and singing.

It keeps on skimming low, then darting free,
So it keeps skimming low and darting away,
neither far away nor ever drawing near;
neither far away nor close at hand.

And still it distracts a shepherd from his flock
and from his flute, until he loses his way.
and his flute, until he loses his way.

عن الشعر لما أن تبعتك راضيا
And you have indeed consumed my thoughts—may love preserve you—
And you have distracted me—may love protect you—
and turned me from poetry when I followed you gladly.
from poetry, when I followed you willingly.

And upon the mirror of my poetry lies a cloud
And on the mirror of my poetry lies a cloud
of your love-distraught breaths, veiling every mirror.
of your love-stricken breaths, veiling the mirrors.

And if the spirit longs to break free, it is hindered
And if the soul longs for flight, it is held back
by the echo of your spirit, drooping-winged and calling.
by the echo of your soft-winged soul, calling.

Your whisper has beguiled me, so I no longer listen
And your whisper distracted me, so I no longer listened
to the melodies of the god of Evil, nor remain aware.
to the melodies of the god of evil, nor remained aware.

And my lyre—what of it, while my fingers
have spent the night toying idly with your hair.
have grown playful, idly toying with your hair?

Might it not be possible, O daughter of love, for an hour,
that my spirit climb the naked breasts,
for my soul to ascend the naked breasts,

I shall cry out in verse if I see it,
and welcome inspiration, easy and well-disposed.
and welcome inspiration, easy and yielding.

Whenever a kiss hovers on the horizon of your lips,
and my lips rise to meet it, all that ails me is gone;
sent aloft by my lips, all that ails me is gone,

and I return joyfully to the lord of Poetry, listening
and I return to the lord of poetry, jubilant, hearing
to the rustle of his wings as he calls my imagination.
the rustle of his wings calling to my imagination.
