They have indeed told me of the flock's death,
They told me of the passing of the flock,
so the hand of pain tightened around my heart.
And the hand of pain tightened upon the heart.
رأيتكI saw you تبكينyou weep بينamid الثرىthe earth

I saw you weeping amid the earth,
I saw you weeping amidst the dust,
and crying out to the sheep-herders for help.
And crying out to the shepherds of the sheep.

And around you a band of shepherdesses
Around you gathered a flock of shepherdesses,
easing your exhaustion and weariness.
Easing your distress and your weariness.

Has the eye of this earth not been kept awake
Did the eye of this earth not shed
by tears that find a flowing course upon it,
Tears that flow freely upon it?

their wellspring in dark, wide eyes?
Their spring comes from beautiful eyes,
Will they then lie beneath the foot today?
Shall they become, today, beneath the feet?

Indeed, adorned beneath the hands of late afternoon
The hands of the afternoon have adorned
were the hillsides, with the shade of the peaks.
The slopes of the hills with the shadow of peaks.

And sleep had already hovered around the pool,
And sleep has hovered around the brook,
so why have its flowers not slept?
So why is it that its flowers have not slept?

And its waves had settled into stillness,
And its waves have settled into stillness,
so the melody died upon its two banks.
So the melody died upon its banks.

And they used to sing in the breeze's lap,
It used to sing in the lap of the breeze,
when it enfolded them late at night and rested.
When it wrapped around it at midnight and rested.

Is it in grief over what befell the flock,
Is it in sorrow for what befell the flock,
their beloved companion, that sickness overtook them?
The companion of her passion, that sickness struck her?
وand مالكwhat is wrong with you? لاnot تملأينyou fill المروجthe meadows ابتساماwith smiles

And why do you not fill the meadows with smiles?
And why do you not fill the meadows with smiles,
For spring has smiled.
For indeed, the spring has smiled.

And above the earth the bow of the clouds melted,
And above the soil, the rainbow dissolved,
so darkness vanished on either side of it.
So the darkness perished on its sides.

Gardens such as lovers yearn for,
Gardens such as lovers desire,

And light kissed the lips of the flowers,
and a river upon which bewilderment was drawn.
And a river upon which amazement was drawn.

I shall weep, though you once used to laugh
I will weep, though you used to seek laughter,
when tears streamed from my eyes.
When the tears flowed down from my eyes.
