So fares one who glimpses the flash of gleaming teeth

And is beguiled by what young women promise him:

The least that comes his way is calamity,

And the slightest thing that befalls him is disaster.

Is she departing before I have had any joy of her,

So that companies of longing may raid me?

Will she make promises my only currency

And leave their fulfillment for some distant time?

You promised a visit, then stayed away from it,

And filled my hopes with delay and evasion.

Stop; no kindness is easier than a greeting.

Will you withhold even greetings from me?

Are those towering constellations, or camel litters?

Are those rising celestial spheres, or mounts?

The beauties pleased him, so he gave no night

To prudent thought that might have guided his judgment.

I followed them with a long, intent gaze

Until I passed the humps of the swift mounts.

May those mountain passes receive no dew,

And may those swift she-camels find no shelter from death.

    أليس بكل مخزية خزايا

    They wounded hearts and showed a dreadful sight;

Does not every shameful deed bring disgrace?

Among the departing litters, if they had mercy, are captives

For whom hearts, themselves captive, would pay ransom.

Their departure scattered my soul apart,

And their going split my heart into shards.

When the early mornings that befell me are counted,

And the red-footed journeys are reckoned,

No day equals yours, the day they went away,

And no night equals the night of Jarjaraya.

I left the couches and cushions

And spoke as the mounts came one after another:

    ولي الويلات إن أزمعت نايا

    Good fortune be yours if you seek to be coy;

Woe be mine if you resolve to go far away.

I gain nothing from the beautiful woman except

What a grieving man gains from empty beehives.

And if his share from them counts as a share,

It exceeds our quarter-share and choice spoils.

She took it as an ill omen when she saw my head dyed,

While troubles lay beneath the veils of danger.

Who will help me against maidens, through nights

And days in which they spread false tales?

She said, ‘You have not dyed your gray hair; rather,

You have wrapped troubles in layer upon layer.’

She marvels at my choice when she sees me

See a sea, yet draw water from shallow wells.

I shall visit the vizier; if the chance arises

To see him and circumstances favor me,

I shall gain whatever generosity I seek from him

And receive the gifts I desire.

I shall return to his watering place, for returning is good,

And come back again, for return brings advantages.

Perhaps the days will make amends under his protection

And urge fate to treat me with the best of care.

O generous sufficer of the capable, to you I complain

Of an age whose ways give no satisfaction.

I have led my lean hopes toward you,

Though troubles are my concern after I fattened those hopes.

    لتعزم عنك أخلاق الرضايا

    You promised me wealth within a month’s journey;

May the ways of pleasing others draw you onward.

I have tested reserves that proved fine as gold,

And found yet more noble qualities, gracious and pure.

O Ismaʿil, what guardian can be called a leader

If he sleeps while his people cannot sleep?

    ترى ابن جلا وطلاع الثنايا

    Lend me the bounty of a favor, and more besides;

You will see a bold man who scales the passes,

Who watches for glory amid storms of calamity

And tends honor in the land of death.
