If a free man had two hands against Time,

My resolve would spur him—except for reliance [wording unclear].

And drive it from my course, humbled,

A blade keen on both edges, sharp at the point.

Whenever a hand from it reaches you,

Unjust in the palm, cruel in the fingertips,

Do you scatter from a garden's twin narcissi

Two necklaces of pearls upon the roses' yield?

A binding assurance of obligation or guarantee

Upon the nights and time's vicissitudes,

If they do not entangle you in their calamities

And do not make you swallow bitter humiliation.

He said, as her coquetry bore her aloft,

As a bān-tree branch bends beneath the east wind:

A form of abasement and a kind of bless—

    —ing that the bamboo perceives.

Indeed you, O man of those firm resolves

That travel with the sun, sharing the reins,

Don, from your resolve, a robe of wishes,

And Time, for us, is seven by eight.

Away from me with your wailing, you there!

I am not one to yield my reins to a maiden.

A full-grown camel's age is not unknown, nor

Am I taught how to veil: I am a mature woman.

I have one more bowshot; if it proves fruitless,

I shall break my bow and shatter my fingertips.

A gift—if it disappoints my desire,

I shall swallow my fierceness and eat my tongue.

And a raid—if it lessens what I seek,

I shall sheathe my sword and remove the spearpoint.

O king of Time, and O you to whom belong

The center of the council and the place of honor,

And the unsheathed keen sword that flows with blood,

And the rain-shedding pen that flows with eloquence:

Are you anything but a single man

Into whose mold the two most generous were poured?

Or are you none other than an honored angel

Whom God made visible to the naked eye?

For this honor, where the deserts lie,

I have spurned my homeland and left humiliation behind,

Just as I demanded from Time its promised hour

With this letter—and now it is time.

O king of Time, through whom I believed

I had remained secure from Time,

Look at the calamity that ambushed me:

Can a trace of it be found, or a visible sign?

If a hopeful man makes a departure

To an arena, two departures precede that place.

And all this, and that sanctuary,

And some of this—and your aid is sought.
