أقول لإحدى المعضلات العظائم

وبالود أني قاعد غير قائمِ
I say, faced with one of the gravest calamities,
wishing I were seated, not standing:

أُعزيك لا فعل اختيار ولا رضى

ولكن على رغمي ورغم المكارم
I console you, not by choice or willing consent,
but despite myself and despite noble virtues.

Lo, the bearer of death-news came early with word that death had laid waste
to a tender green shoot of what glory had brought forth.

The news of his death coincided with Mihragan day
for us; that day we read omens from ill-boding birds.

وسرنا حفاة حُسّراً في المآتم
So, inevitably, we exchanged silk for grief at his loss,
and walked barefoot and bareheaded at the mourning gatherings,

أُعزى فلا أهدا لصيحة خادم
So if you lend me a receptive ear, I myself
am consoled, yet find no peace at a servant's cry.

reflect on how little enjoyment this world affords;
and what we live in is nothing but a dreamer's dreams.

And think a while: do they count anyone unscathed
back to Adam, or see a son of an unscathed man?

If you alone have been singled out, then grief is your right;
otherwise, do not cast aside noble resolve.

For we have an appointed meeting with what he reached,
and the tail feathers follow the foremost wing feathers.
