I am bound to give no rest to life or the camel-saddle.

And clothe myself in deserts, darkness, and leather armor.

And leave the tender maiden, whose lips are honey-sweet,

And forsake the cup that feeds its drinkers delight.

    والسير يسكرني من مسه تعبا

    The wilderness suffices as my sitting-place, and owls as singers;

And travel intoxicates me with the weariness of its touch.

And a tender maiden, like a bending bough of the bān-tree

When she walks, and like the month's veiled crescent,

Keeps scattering beads of tears from her eyelids

Before me, and stringing beads from her teeth.

She said, clutching my garment's hem as she bade me farewell,

While longing choked her, pouring forth in tears:

“May high ambition's milk never flow! It always has

A flash that lures you, neither easily won nor near.

O wellspring of bounty, whose watering places are sweet,

Just as its banks were smiling, it suddenly ran dry.

You made a moon rise for me, auspicious in its risings,

Until, just as I said, ‘It dispels my darkness,’ it set.

    You were youth itself: at its fullest splendor, you vanished;

And you were like the rose, gone at its most fragrant bloom.

I entrust to God an eye that sends tears forth in torrents,

Until you return, and a heart that hurls out flame,

And a departing traveler from whom separation has taken its fill,

Before hopes could gain from him what they sought.”

I said, “Put back on patience's veil, for ours will be

A yearning lover's return to you, a homecoming.”

My nobility would not let me dwell in humiliation's abode,

And an ambition that joins swift camel-strides with trotting,

And a resolve that forever keeps anchoring

A tent-rope below the prince and above Jupiter.

O lord of princes, take pride: no king exists

Who does not wish you as lord and long for you as father.

When high honors call you the crest upon their head,

They will not accept Kisrā, or anyone before him, as a tail.

Where stand those who amass wealth beside a king

Who calls what he has given and bestowed his treasure?

Neither the shattering sword nor the heaped-up torrent,

Nor the clashing sea nor the approaching night,

Is sharper-edged than you, more fearsome than you in its thunderbolt,

More bountiful of right hand, or more accessible when sought.

And rain's downpour, streaming, would almost resemble you,

If it wore a cheerful face and showered gold.

    So would time, if it did not betray, and the sun, if it spoke;

And the lion, if it did not hunt, and the sea, if it were sweet.

O you whom the kings of earth behold above them,

As they behold the blazing stars above its towers,

    ولا تهابنَّ في أمثالها العَربا

    Do not lie: the best speech is the truest;

And do not fear the Arabs in comparisons like these.

For neither al-Samawʾal in fidelity nor al-Khalīl in hospitality,

Nor Ibn Suʿdā in generosity nor al-Shanfarā in prowess,

Is worth a tenth of the prince: when they divide

Glory's exploits, he has plundered all they achieved before.

Neither Ibn Ḥujr nor al-Dhubyān equals a tenth of me,

Nor al-Māzinī nor al-Qaysī, when I rise to the task.

    هذا لرغبته هذا إذا طربا

    This one for his riding, this one for his fear;

This one for his desire, this one when he rejoices.
