سفينة لم تعتمل بنجر
ولمand not يجبbe required فبهاso within it عظيمgreat أجرreward
ولم يجب فبها عظيم أجر
A ship not fashioned by carpentry,
Nor was it required; within it lies great reward.
تجريruns ولكنand yet فوقover ظهرthe back of البرdry land
تجري ولكن فوق ظهر البر
تجرىis driven ولاand not تجريruns بغيرwithout مُجْرa driver
تجرى ولا تجري بغير مُجْر
It runs, but over the back of dry land.
It is driven, and does not run without a driver.
محمرةreddened قدalready أُزرتhas been girdled بخضرwith green
محمرة قد أُزرت بخضر
أشبهmost like شيءa thing ناتئاًprotruding بالبظرto the clitoris
أشبه شيء ناتئاً بالبظر
Reddened, it has been girdled with green.
Protruding, it is most like a clitoris.
يدخلenters فيهاinto it كذراعlike the foreleg of البكرthe young camel
يدخل فيها كذراع البكر
أصلعbald يزهىis adorned أصلهits base بالشعرwith hair
أصلع يزهى أصله بالشعر
Into it goes something like a young camel’s foreleg,
Bald, its base adorned with hair.
ذيhaving أخواتsisters فيwithin ذراعa cubit عشرten
ذي أخوات في ذراع عشر
مشفعاتpaired شفعهاtheir pairing منfrom وترa cord
مشفعات شفعها من وتر
Having sisters, ten within a cubit,
Paired, their pairing made with a cord.
كالشبرlike a handspan طولاًin length عرضهits width فيwithin فترa thumb-to-forefinger span
كالشبر طولاً عرضه في فتر
ياO نائمasleep الفطنةwit غثfeeble الفكرthought
يا نائم الفطنة غث الفكر
A handspan long, a thumb-to-forefinger span wide.
O you with sleeping wit and feeble thought,
أخرجreveal وإلاand if not فمقصthen the cutting place الشعرof hair
أخرج وإلا فمقص الشعر
لماfor what اعمّيهI obscure it مكانa place مقرof rest
لما اعمّيه مكان مقر
Reveal it; otherwise, the place where hair is cut
Is a resting place for what I keep obscure.
