May God water Najd whenever they mention Najd.

Yet pining for it in longing is too little to offer Najd.

    وجَدت لمسراها على كبدي بَردا

    I thrilled, and a moist north wind stirred me;

I felt the cool of its night passage upon my liver.

And ah, how lovely Najd and the cool of its late afternoon,

and the plentiful life we left within its bounds,

those nights when I was reunited with my loved ones,

and when my lush bough had no room for restraint.

By the life of those gentle gazelles at al-Aqiq,

indeed, at al-Liwa they caught me, a tawny lion.

Had they not let their talk fall as though

they were thinning honey with aged wine,

I would have denied my heart any sanctuary,

and kept my tears' necklace from being unstrung.

And a resolve that, whenever I camped, traveled on alone—

with it I tore night's cloak from my shoulders.

For him I weaned my resolve before its suckling,

and toward him I drove the marked, sleek steeds.

    No hazard but I have kissed its hand;

    nor danger but I struck a firestick for it;

    ولا حَضَرٌ إلا وظلْتُ له وَفْدا

    nor desert but I became its viper at evening;

nor settled place but I spent the day there as a visiting envoy.

    إليها تخطّيت الأساوِدَ والأُسدا

    I lined each ordeal's eye with the kohl of my resolve;

to reach it, I stepped over black serpents and lions,

with the ambition of one who finds glory's bitterness sweet,

and the resolve of one who brings distant honor near.

Through it I trod kings' carpets, honored,

though no kinship had ever linked me to them.

And I came to pass through the screened-off door,

while others are lavishly driven away for passing it.

I am no timid man who, when his hand cannot reach

his amulet, blames Time or bounty.

God forbids me humiliation's abode, as do a resolve

ever watchful, and the she-camels striding swiftly with us.

Time became adorned through me with glorious deeds,

and I went forth like a sword blade, Time bearing me alone.

The peoples have learned that my watering place

of glory has never offered anyone an easy draught.

I am no true man if I watch a cloud's lightning

belonging to anyone but a generous man, or listen to its thunder.

Whenever my mount reaches the venerable elder,

may I lose my hand if I do not slit its hide.

It will visit a king who gives lavishly when sober,

and strikes kings' heads when he charges.

He gives bounty sway over all but his sacred bounds,

and uses restraint in all but his noble deeds.

Have you not seen me fetter my resolve in Tus?

But for him, it would never lie dew-cooled upon my liver.

I was a man who would not accept Glory as a servant,

so highly did I prize myself; yet I branded myself his slave.

We sought you, not because error had turned us aside,

but we turned aside deliberately to meet you.

So my hope has not failed, nor my keen sword glanced away,

nor my shot missed, nor my quest struck barren ground.

Were you rain, no rainless lightning would be seen,

and were you a sea, it would forever be at flood tide.

O you who fill my mouth with pride and my hand with bounty,

whose favors fulfill hopes, whose good fortune matches bounty,

lend me a hand that showers dinars in generosity,

as boughs scatter roses on a day of the east wind.

I will lend you praise whose delegations miss no day,

as rains scatter hail upon the hills.

And I will clothe you in praise whose unique pearl is never repeated,

as fragrant incense breathes its scent when moistened.

You make noble efforts fresh again after their dryness,

and gray-haired meanings beardless youths after their old age.

Bring the gifts, for gifts open throats,

and bounty's downpour calls on inspiration to fulfill its promise.

I have brought you praise at a high asking price:

is yours a buyer's desire for my praise, or indifference?

Let my praises kiss a palm with which you build high honor,

and do not deny me a plan by which you make glory flourish.

For life is only what earns you remembrance,

and wealth is only what you use to buy praise.

And no realm whose affairs you govern

offers a claw a hold while you remain its bulwark.
