Ask the noble king: how far will you build,

and where, when you have already surpassed the sky?

Truly, God fashioned you as nothing but

    loftiness, generosity, and faithfulness.

Even if you melted me down, I would be nothing but

    loyalty, prayer, and praise.

From the very heart I granted you an affection

that, in its abundance, could almost quench the thirsty.

Would balm fail me when they scratch themselves,

or healing for al-Kalbī when they fall ill?

You raced with kings to the furthest course,

and surpassed them in splendor and ascent.

You surpassed them in largesse and had wealth to spare,

for whoever seeks praise casts riches away.

Is one who gathers dirhams and hoards them

like one who gathers wisdom? They are not equal.

The throne’s two sides almost put forth leaves,

and its wood drips softness and water

when your feet stride toward it in haste,

toward its timbers—or when it is said, “He has come.”
