    By the life of high honors, their pursuit is indeed easy;

except that they are a house with no inhabitants.

Your mercy, I beg, for a noble man who alighted among a company:

they are sheep: no milk have they yielded, nor have they any milk.

So he tried to draw out through poetry what they possessed,

and that is what neither hand nor deed accomplished.

    He complained of fortune and the days when they did not favor him;

so he complained only of what people had complained of before.

    Take comfort: we too have a hand in these calamities;

and be patient: in this flock we too have a lamb.

Did you not know that generosity, glory, and wisdom

are wishes: dream of them, and ritual bathing becomes obligatory?

Beware: let not al-Husayn and his generosity deceive you

into hoping in people whose cup holds no bounty.

For you will not always find his like,

nor does every land have an equal to al-Husayn.

I seek protection for you from meeting mankind in his garb,

and in his form—how far off resemblance lies!

For the species is not included beneath every genus,

nor is every tree you behold a palm.

Nor will peoples perform deeds like his,

nor do the other flies do what bees do.

And most of these people, if you test them, are neither Abu

Ali Husayn nor Abu Tayyib Sahl.

O she-camel that brought me to him: forbidden

to you is night travel—nay, the saddle upon your back.

May this gladden the favored elder, for he

is his son; without the branch, the root would not be honored.

You two resemble one another in excellence and glory, so it is unclear

whether the root or the offspring is finer by comparison.

Thus Time decrees for their enemies and for them:

with a star of theirs falling and a star of theirs rising.
