كأن عبد اللّه فيها قد خري
A slave girl is flogged with a slanderer's prescribed punishment.
As though ʿAbd Allāh had shat in her.
قبيحةugly المنظرin appearance ذاتpossessing مخبرinner nature
قبيحة المنظر ذات مخبر
كأنهاas though she قدalready ضمختwas anointed بالعنبرwith ambergris
كأنها قد ضمخت بالعنبر
Ugly in appearance, with an inner nature,
As though she had been anointed with ambergris.
معشوقةadored فيfor قدهاher figure المختصرdiminutive
معشوقة في قدها المختصر
كأنهاas though she الدلوthe Bucket (Aquarius) حذاءopposite المشتريJupiter
كأنها الدلو حذاء المشتري
Adored for her diminutive figure,
As though she were the Bucket opposite Jupiter.
تزهىshe preens بأذنينwith two ears ورأسand a head حجريof stone
تزهى بأذنين ورأس حجري
أطعنI thrust منهاof her فيinto سواءِthe very center of الثُّغَرthe openings
أطعن منها في سواءِ الثُّغَر
She preens with two ears and a head of stone.
I thrust into the very center of her openings.
نسألهاwe ask her عنabout عجرknots وبجرand swellings
نسألها عن عجر وبجر
تصدقناshe tells us the truth عنabout مودعاتdeposited things الخبرthe tidings
تصدقنا عن مودعات الخبر
We ask her about knots and swellings;
She tells us truly of the tidings deposited within.
نعيتI was announced dead (uncertain reading) فيهنin them بمسىat the dusk of (uncertain reading) الأسرcaptivity
نعيت فيهن بمسى الأسر
تسكنshe dwells فيin بيتa house لهاfor her مسعرheated
تسكن في بيت لها مسعر
In them, my death was announced at captivity's dusk [wording uncertain].
She dwells in a house heated for her.
تسفرshe unveils عنfrom وجهa face لهاof hers مخدرveiled
تسفر عن وجه لها مخدر
مخردلseasoned with mustard مفلفلseasoned with pepper مسعترseasoned with thyme

She unveils a veiled face of hers,
Mustard-seasoned, peppered, and thyme-seasoned.

Black as pitch or something coated in pitch,
In her lap is something white like the moon,
مطرزembroidered بالامwith pains (uncertain reading) منfrom ذاتone possessing حرa vulva
مطرز بالام من ذات حر
أخرجbring it forth هداكmay He guide you اللّهGod لاdo not تقصرfall short
أخرج هداك اللّه لا تقصر
Embroidered with pains [reading uncertain], from one with a vulva.
Bring it forth—may God guide you—do not fall short,
إنif كنتyou are ذاpossessing حذقskill بهاconcerning her أوor بصرdiscernment
إن كنت ذا حذق بها أو بصر
If you possess skill concerning her, or discernment.
