مقدار ألفي فرسخ ونيف
He races through summer's shortened nights
A distance of two thousand parasangs and a little more.
يبهرجhe counterfeits النقدcoinage كثيرabundant in الزيفdeceit
يبهرج النقد كثير الزيف
أبوfather of المحالimpossibilities واسمهand his name is طويفTuwayf
أبو المحال واسمه طويف
He counterfeits coin, full of deceit:
Abu al-Muhal, father of impossibilities, whose name is Tuwayf.
لماwhen نزلناwe alighted بالمنىat Mina فالخيفand then at al-Khayf
لما نزلنا بالمنى فالخيف
وذلكand that بواديin the valley of فيفFayf
وذلك بوادي فيف
When we alighted at Mina, then at al-Khayf,
And that was in the valley of Fayf,
هبhe swept in إليناtoward us كهبوبlike the blowing of الهيفthe hot, dry wind
هب إلينا كهبوب الهيف
ولمand did not يسرtravel قدرthe measure of غرارthe edge of السيفthe sword
ولم يسر قدر غرار السيف
He swept toward us like the blast of a scorching wind,
Yet he had not traveled even the breadth of a sword's edge.
ياO نائمasleep الفطنةdiscernment قلsay ليto me كيفhow
يا نائم الفطنة قل لي كيف
O you whose wit is asleep, tell me how!
