Do you ask what fifty years have done?

Youth wears out, but its virtues do not.

In the heart lies a treasure of youth that never runs out.

It gives, and grows the more its gifts increase.

For not one glory of its youthful ardor folds away

But a thousand burst forth in its depths.

Is there a fragrance of youth's wine in its corners?

All the dew-moistened nectar lies in its corners.

Youth remains dew-fresh in his character.

So his heart has not grown gray, even if his temples have.

The rose adorned itself in colors to enchant us.

Will the rose swear that we did not enchant it?

Thirsty in its breast, amid its dew-sprinkled grove,

It did not slake its thirst with dew until we plucked it.

This choicest wine—may God prolong its intoxication—

We pressed it from miserly lips.

Exalted is He who created the world and adorned it

With poetry, the purest distillation of His graces.

We are those He chose from among His beloved ones.

Were wine passed around, we would be His drinking companions.

    فكنت نعمته النشوى و معناه

    And He ennobled poetry when He fashioned it as luxury;

So you were His intoxicated blessing and its meaning.

And He began reciting to us a flawless ode—a lip,

And an eye; we went mad and asked Him to recite it again.

My soul be ransom for an idol—how needy we were

For him, amid the pride of bliss—and how self-sufficient he was!

Whether he remembers or forgets, may there be no safety

For my eye or my liver, if I should forget him.

O you who gave us brimming cups of estrangement to drink,

The carpet of love wept when we rolled it up.
