1. Direct your bounty to the changing faces of time,
Bestowing thousands in your youth as a dear friend.

2. It is the state of winds and ease,
And the future of the gentle times.

3. What spring fulfilled of blossoming
Is lost to its right in autumn.

4. We are in it, receiving a winter
That requires barrenness or leaving the summer resort.

5. In a flimsy garment of time,
And a light coat of air.

6. The water ripples in fright when
Touched by the hand of the gentle breeze.

7. Our time is in fruits and their enjoyment,
The excellent sorts and classification.

8. The rush of migrants has settled from us,
And the violence of time has relented.

9. And space was adorned with the lilies of the land
In a charming, colorful appearance.

10. In nights whose stars are like virgins
Appearing through the niches.

11. Which of the two is awake from ecstasy
And looking with a bleeding eye?

12. Why do our cups wander like a lost foot
And our jugs stop like convoys?

13. Quench the thirst of our cups, do you not see return
Blaming the cupbearers for skimping?

14. This death at which al-Hasan stopped
At the death of the anxious.

15. A blessed pond in which the warriors are paved,
And channels pouring out chains of swords.

16. And branches fluttering over gardens
Like the fluttering of flags over the ranks.

17. A scene that veils sights from it
With veils of brilliance and summer.

18. To Saif al-Dawla it has from its splendor
Spots that dwell in the place of masts.

19. And meteors have tossed their lights
In a space above the lofty space.

20. The sun returns when the sun glimpses it
With a glance of its light being severed.

21. Beauties from the lords of the Abbasids
Of sun-tanned faces and prominent noses.

22. From seas that were not set for drought
And lands that were not timed for eclipse.

23. I praise Allah, how many favors He has granted me
In an assembly filled with them.

24. I attained what I sought by the auspices of my father Tamim,
The desired for every fearful one.

25. O noble master who has exceeded
Every master and noble one.

26. It suffices me if I fall short of thanking you
For you followed it with a renewed blessing.

27. Content without lengthy elaboration and prolonging,
Preferring propriety and what is proper.

28. Hastening to beauty pleasantly,
And slowly leaving ugliness aloof.

29. Preceeding every pious one in his piety,
Surpassing every chaste one in modesty.

30. If a spectacle is lacked, it is a full moon,
Or if a report is lacked, it is a ferocious lion.

31. And the place of honor in the eye is its abode
From the heart in the gentlest place.

32. A scholar, the utmost of your pleasure, and did not know it
A knower without definition has realized it.

33. He attained your advice like your mature loyalists,
And did not attain the position of assistant.

34. And he assumed manners from you, so from an
Aged camel have you rendered him well-mannered and delightful.

35. And he clothed himself with wisdom and precision, nay he
Exceeded his ranks, the forbearing and precise one.

36. An understanding one making understandable, articulating
With speech of the most eloquent composition.

37. In a position of trust he is found alone in it,
And found in a familiar position in it.

38. Halting his thoughts between your orders, never
Wearying though prolonging the halt.

39. An obedience that hastened him from seeing him
Taking the path of determination in procrastination.

40. So God nurtured him in you and made you
Tend to him for a long time with a compassionate eye.
