أَحاديثُ نَفسٍ وَأِحلامَها
Khunās came visiting, and her visit was
The stillness and silence grieved her,
The soul’s musings and its dreams.
The meditations of her soul and its dreams.

A Yemeni woman of Banū Mālik,
A Yemenite, from the tribe of Malik -
Her paternal uncles rose high in glory.
Her uncles were exalted in glory.
وَإِنَّand indeed لَناwe have أَصلَa root جُرثومَةٍancestral stock
وَإِنَّ لَنا أَصلَ جُرثومَةٍ
تَرُدُّdrives back الحَوادِثَcalamities أَيّامُهاits days
تَرُدُّ الحَوادِثَ أَيّامُها
And indeed ours is a rooted ancestral stock,
Yet we have an origin, a noble root -
Whose days drive back calamities.
The days roll back according to its movements.

It drives back the battalion in shackles
With its weakness upon it, and its flaws upon it.
By it I overwhelm them and by it I hope.
