خَبَرٌnews أَتاكَcame to you وَنامَتِand slept العُوّادُvisitors to the sick
It banished sleep, so no slumber is felt:
Sleep is denied so how can one feel sleepy
news that reached you while the visitors slept.
News has reached you when the visitors slept
خَبَرٌnews أَتانيcame to me عَنabout عُيينَةَʿUyaynah مُوجَعٌpainful
وَلِمِثلِهِand at its like تَتَصَدَّعُsplit apart الأَكبادُthe livers
Painful news came to me of ʿUyaynah,
Grievous news reached me about Uyainah
and at such news, livers are rent apart.
At which livers would crack
بَلَغَreached النُفوسَthe souls بَلاؤُهاtheir affliction فَكَأَنَّناso it is as though we
مَوتىdead وَفيناand within us الروحُthe spirit وَالأَجسادُand the bodies
The souls were overwhelmed by their affliction, as though we were
Troubles have reached the souls, so we seemed
dead, though we still have spirit and bodies.
As if dead, while the soul and bodies remained
ساءَdistressed الأَقارِبَthe kinsmen يَومَthe day ذاكَthat فَأَصبَحواso they became
بِهَجينَwith disgrace قَدalready سَرّواthey gladdened بِهِby it الحُسّادُthe envious
It distressed the kinsmen that day, and they were left
The kinsfolk felt happy that day, so they became
with a disgrace that had brought the envious joy.
With joy, which the envious loved
يَرجونَthey hope for عَثرَةَa stumble حَدِّناour might وَلَوَand if اَنَّهُمthat they
لاnot يَدفَعونَthey ward off بِناthrough us المَكارِهَhardships بادواthey perished
They hope for our might to stumble; yet if they
They hope for our stumbling even if they
did not ward off hardships through us, they would perish.
Cannot drive troubles away from us
لَمّاwhen أَتانيcame to me عَنabout عُيينَةَʿUyaynah أَنَّهُthat he
عانٍa captive تَظاهَرَpiled up فَوقَهُabove him الأَقيادُthe fetters
When word came to me of ʿUyaynah, that he was
When news about Uyainah reached me that he
a captive, with fetters piled upon him,
Was helpless, overwhelmed by shackles
نَخَلَتsifted لَهُfor him نَفسيmy soul النَصيحَةَsincere goodwill أَنَّهُthat it is the case
عِندَduring الشَدائِدِhardships تَذهَبُfade away الأَحقادُgrudges
my soul sifted out pure goodwill for him, for
My soul sincerely advised him that
in times of hardship, grudges fade away.
Grudges disappear during adversities
وَعَلِمتُand I knew أَنّيthat I إِنif فَقَدتُI lost مَكانَهُhis place
ذَهَبَwent away البِعادُestrangement فَكانَand so there was فيهِin it بِعادُseparation
And I knew that if I lost his presence,
And I knew if I lost his position
estrangement would vanish, and in that would lie separation.
Separation would disappear, so he was company
وَرَأَيتُand I saw فيin وَجهِthe face العَدُوِّthe enemy شَكاسَةًsurliness
وَتَغَيَّرَتand changed ليfor me أَوجُهٌfaces وَبِلادُand lands
And I saw surliness in the enemy's face,
And I saw fierceness on the enemy's face
and faces and lands changed for me.
Faces and countries changed for me
وَذَكَرتُand I considered أَيَّwhich فَتىًyoung man يَسُدُّfills مَكانَهُhis place
بِالرِّفدِwith bounty حينَwhen تَقاصَرُfall short الأَرفادُgifts
And I pondered which young man could fill his place
And I remembered which brave man would take his place
with bounty, when gifts fall short,
With support, when comrades fall short
أَمor مَنwho يُهينُholds cheap لَناfor us كَرائِمَthe choicest portions مالِهِhis wealth
وَلَناand for us إِذاwhenever عُدناwe returned إِلَيهِto him مَعادُa place of return
or who would hold his choicest wealth cheap for us,
Or who would humiliate our prestigious wealth for us
and be our refuge whenever we return to him?
While we have a return to it
لَوif كانَhe were مَنfrom حَضَنٍḤaḍan تَضاءَلَdwindled رُكنُهُits flank
أَوor مِنfrom نَضادَNaḍād بَكَتwept عَلَيهِfor him نَضادُNaḍād
Had he been of Ḥaḍan, its flank would have dwindled,
If it was someone whose pillar crumbled
or of Naḍād, Naḍād would have wept for him.
Or who wept over, so settlements wept over him
