I spend the night at the gates of rhyme, as though
I were coaxing there a herd of far-straying wild beasts,

Defiant, except when you set behind them
A camel-pen staff that strikes faces and forelegs.

When I fear they may be recited against me, I drive them back
Behind my collarbones, for fear they might emerge.
