فَقَدتُI lost حَياةًa life بَعدَafter طَلحَةَTalha حُلوَةًsweet
إِذاwhen شَعَبتَهُcut him off أَنto يُجيبَanswer شَعوبُShaʿūb (Death)
I lost a sweet life after Talha,
I lost the sweetness of life after Talha
When Shaʿūb (Death) cut him off from answering.
When you call upon him, the people respond
يُصَمُّare deafened رِجالٌmen حينَwhen يُدعَونَthey are called لِلنَّدىto generosity
وَيُدعىand is called اِبنُson عوفٍAwf لِلنَّدىto generosity فَيُجيبُso he answers
Men turn deaf when called upon to give,
Men stay silent when they are called to help
And Ibn Awf is called upon to give, so he answers.
Yet Ibn 'Awf is called to help and he responds
وَذاكَand that one اِمرؤٌa man مِنfrom أَيِّwhichever عَطفَيهِhis two sides يَلتَفِتhe turns
إِلىtoward المَجدِglory يَحوِhe gains المَجدَglory وَهوَand it is قَريبُnear
And he is a man: whichever of his two sides he turns
He is a man who turns
Toward glory, he gains glory, and it is close at hand.
Toward glory, desiring glory, and it is near
