كُنّاwe were لَكُمto you ياO مُرَّMurr أَمّاًa mother حَفِيَّةًdevoted
وَكُنتُمand you were لَناto us ياO مُرَّMurr بَوّاًa dummy calf مُجَلَّداclad in hide
We were a devoted mother to you, O Murr;
and you were a hide-clad dummy calf to us, O Murr.
وَكُنتُمand you were لَناto us سَيفاًa sword وَكُنّاand we were وِعاءَهُits sheath
إِذاwhenever نَحنُwe خِفناfeared أَنthat يَكِلَّit might grow dull فَيُغمَداand so be sheathed
And you were a sword to us, and we were its sheath,
whenever we feared it might grow dull and so be sheathed.
