Answer me, Abu Hafs; may you meet Muhammad
Answer me, O Abu Hafs, did you meet Muhammad
at his pool, rejoicing, and may he see you.
At his Pond, rejoicing, and he saw you?
فَأَنتَfor you are اِمرُؤٌa man كِلتاboth of يَدَيكَyour two hands مُفيدَةٌbestowing gifts
شِمالُكَyour left hand خَيرٌbetter مِنthan يَمينِthe right hand of سِواكاsomeone other than you
For you are a man whose hands both bestow gifts;
So you are a man whose two hands are beneficial -
your left hand is better than anyone else's right.
Your left is better than the right of others.
عَلامَwhy حِجابيmy exclusion زادَكَmay He increase you اللَهُGod رِفعَةًeminence
وَفَضلاًand excellence وَماذاand what لِلحِجابِto barring access دَعاكاprompted you
Why am I kept out? May God increase your eminence
Why does the veil increase your loftiness
and excellence; and what prompted you to bar me?
And virtue? What has the veil summoned you to?
بَلَغتَyou reached مَدىthe farthest reach of المُجرِمينَthe criminals قَبلَكَbefore you إِذwhen جَرواthey ran
وَلَمand have not يَبلُغِreach المُجرونَthe racers بَعدُyet مَداكاyour farthest reach
You reached the farthest mark of the criminals before you when they ran;
You reached the extent of criminals before you, when they dragged along,
and the racers have not yet reached your farthest mark.
And the criminals have not yet reached your extent.
فَجَدّاكَfor your two grandfathers لاno جَدَّينِtwo grandfathers أَكرَمُnobler مِنهُماthan those two
هُناكَthere تَناهىreached its utmost المَجدُglory ثُمَّthen هُناكاthere
For your two grandfathers—no two grandfathers are nobler than they—
So your two ancestors, there is no more honorable than them,
there glory reached its utmost, and then there.
There glory reaches its end, and there reaches its end.
