ياO عَينُeye جوديbe generous with tears عَلىfor عَمروُAmr بنِson of مَسعودِMasud
يا عَينُ جودي عَلى عَمروُ بنِ مَسعودِ
أَهلِa man of العَفافِchastity وَأَهلِand a man of الحَزمِsound judgment وَالجودِand generosity
أَهلِ العَفافِ وَأَهلِ الحَزمِ وَالجودِ
O eye, pour out your tears for Amr ibn Masud,
O my eyes, be generous to Amr ibn Mas'ud
A man of chastity, sound judgment, and generosity.
The people of chastity, wisdom and generosity
أَودىhas perished رَبيعُspringtime الصَعاليكِthe destitute الأُلىthose who اِنتَجَعواsought sustenance
أَودى رَبيعُ الصَعاليكِ الأُلى اِنتَجَعوا
وَكُلَّand all ماthat فَوقَهاupon it—the earth مِنof صالِحٍa worthy person موديdestined to perish
وَكُلَّ ما فَوقَها مِن صالِحٍ مودي
The springtime of the destitute who sought sustenance has perished,
The spring of valorous youths has passed away in Intaj
And every worthy soul upon the earth will perish.
And all the righteous after it are grieving
المُطعِمُthe feeder of الحيَّthe living وَالأَمواتَand the dead إِنif نَزَلواthey came to lodge
المُطعِمُ الحيَّ وَالأَمواتَ إِن نَزَلوا
شَحمَfat السَنامِthe hump مِنَfrom الكومِhigh-humped she-camels المَقاحيدِthick-humped
شَحمَ السَنامِ مِنَ الكومِ المَقاحيدِ
He who fed the living and the dead, if they came to lodge,
The one who feeds the living and the dead when they come
Fat from the humps of lofty, thick-humped she-camels;
The choicest meat of the hump from the best she-camels
وَالواهِبُand the giver of المِئَةَthe hundred المِعكاءَfull in number يَشفَعُهاhe doubles it
وَالواهِبُ المِئَةَ المِعكاءَ يَشفَعُها
يَومَon the day of النِضالِthe archery contest بِأُخرىwith another غَيرَnot مَجهودِstrained
يَومَ النِضالِ بِأُخرى غَيرَ مَجهودِ
And gave a full hundred camels, doubling their number
And the one who gives away a hundred lean she-camels as charity
On the day of the archery contest with another hundred, without strain.
On the day of strife he doubles it without effort
إِنَّindeed مِنَamong القومِthe people مَوجوداًto be found خَليفَتُهُhis successor
إِنَّ مِنَ القومِ مَوجوداً خَليفَتُهُ
وَماbut not خَليفُa successor to أَبيAbu—father of وَهبٍWahb بِمَوجودِto be found at all
وَما خَليفُ أَبي وَهبٍ بِمَوجودِ
Indeed, among men are those whose successor can be found,
Indeed, among the people he has a successor after him
But no successor to Abu Wahb can be found.
But the successor of Abu Wahb is not to be found
