The sons of al-Abras were your equals,

and they overtook the younger and the older alike.

When Amr said to the sons of Malik,

“Do not hurry the cord before it is firmly twisted.”

The men spent the night finding guests for themselves,

until, when their night grew dark,

they served them a grey, tightly massed army,

like a blazing fire—or fiercer still.

By God, but for Qurzul when he escaped,

al-Akhram would have been your cheek’s resting place.

A surging, thundering steed saved you, as when

you heated the branding iron amid camel hair.
