لَعَمرُكَby your life ماnot آسىsupported طُفَيلُTufayl بنُson of مالِكٍMalik
بَنيthe sons of عامِرٍAmir إِذwhen ثابِتِrallied الخَيلُthe cavalry تَدَّعيcalling tribal war cries
By your life, Tufayl son of Malik did not stand by
By your life, Tufail ibn Malik
the sons of Amir when the cavalry rallied, calling their tribal war cries.
Of Bani Amir did not grieve when the cavalry were behaving arrogantly,
تَقَبَّلَhe received مِنfrom خَيفانَةٍa swift mare جُرشُعِيَّةٍbroad-chested
سَليلَةِdaughter of مَعروقِlean-fleshed الأَباجِلِthe leg-veins جُرشُعِbroad-chested
He received a mount from a swift, broad-chested mare,
As he bid farewell to his beloved Khaifanah at Jurshu'a,
daughter of a broad-chested sire with lean, veiny legs.
A descendant of famous stallions at Jurshu',
وَوَدَّعَand bade farewell to إِخوانَcompanions of الصَفاءِsincere friendship بِقُرزُلٍon Qurzul
يَمُرُّspeeding past كَمِرّيخِlike the arrow of الوَليدِthe boy المُقَزَّعِwith hair shaved in patches
And he bade his loyal comrades farewell on Qurzul,
And parted from his loyal brothers at Qurzul,
speeding like the arrow of a boy with patch-shaven hair.
Passing like the bright comet of Walid when it flares up,
وَلَوand if أَدرَكَتهُcaught up with him الخَيلُthe cavalry شالَhe raised بِرِجلِهِwith his leg
كَماjust as شالَhe raised يَومَon the day of الخالِal-Khal كَعبُKa'b بنُson of أَصمَعِAsma'
And had the cavalry caught him, he would have raised his leg,
Had the horsemen reached him he would have fled on his feet
as Ka'b son of Asma' did on the day of al-Khal,
As Ka'b ibn Asim fled on the day of Al-Khal,
فِراراًin flight وَأَسلَمتَand you abandoned اِبنَthe son of أُمِّكَyour mother عامِراًAmir
يُلاعِبُplaying with أَطرافَthe points of الوَشيجِthe spear-shafts المُزَعزَعِbrandished
in flight—and you abandoned your mother's son, Amir,
You fled to save your mother's son, Amir,
playing with the points of the brandished spears.
Who plays with the edges of torn garments,
وَقَدand already عَلِمَتknew عِرساكَyour two wives أَنَّكَthat you آيِبٌreturning home
تُخَبِّرُهُمyou tell them عَنabout جَيشِهِمtheir army كُلَّevery مَربَعِspringtime
And your two wives know that you will return,
And your enemies know well that you
telling them about their army each spring.
Inform them of the army's every move.
