O my two eyes, tears must pour and stream

For Fadalah, whose loss is great, whose station was high.

    لَيسَ الفُقودُ وَلا الهَلكى بِأَمثالِ

    Brim for him with your tear-ducts' water, and overflow;

Neither those lost nor the dead are all alike.

As for Haṣān, her curtain did not conceal her.

For years I have roamed among all these people,

Seeking a common man, among those I have heard of,

    More generous and more accomplished than he in every excellence;

More lavish than he in giving a patterned sword and full mail,

And a singing-girl of many graces among drinking companions,

And an outstanding steed that surpasses a thousand when displayed,

And a gentle mare with a forehead blaze and white stockings.

O Abu Dulayjah, who can be entrusted with a widow,

Or who will help a destitute, disheveled man in two worn garments?

Or who will speak for the people when they assemble

Before kings possessed of cunning and words?

Or who will help a people who mismanaged some of their affairs,

    Wavering between injustice and obedience?

    وَحُمِّلوا مِن أَذى غُرمٍ بِأَثقالِ

    They feared annihilation, and their kings devised pretexts;

And they were laden with heavy burdens of grievous indemnities.

You relieved their grief and were their rain,

Until their dwelling was secure after upheaval.

O Abu Dulayjah, who will meet the clan's needs when

They find themselves in confusion and turmoil over their affairs?

Or who will help evasive people lost in bewilderment,

Who have mixed truth with falsehood in their affairs?

Or who will face a massed raiding force that deals death,

Like a cloudbank from the rocky hills of Aw‘al?

When they saw you on a steed with powerful flanks,

Bearing the arms of a warrior who never holds back,

And of a horseman on whose ground no tribe will camp,

They fled swiftly, never thinking of advancing.

    No surging flood-channel from al-Marrut,

Hurling acacia and wild lote trunks against the bank,

    وَلا مُغِبٌّ بِتَرجٍ بَينَ أَشبالِ

    Is ever more generous than he when you ask him;

Nor one returning on alternate days to Tarj, among cubs—

A lion with papyrus flakes clinging to him,

Is ever bolder than he in the heat of a sudden onset,

Against an armored warrior, with a fine-edged, cleaving blade.

May musk and sweet basil, rich in fragrance, ever remain

Upon your remains, with clear, sweet-flowing water,

Watering your remains and where they lie at dusk and dawn,

Abundantly, your grave encircled by shade.

You bequeathed me people's affection and their friendship,

And remembrance of you envelops me in reverence.

So my praise, without a lie, will always remain

The words of a man who neither forgets him nor finds solace.

By the life of the fate that profited from his death—

It has undermined my throne—utterly undermined it.

My soul, had they demanded ransom for him, would have been

Ready to offer you my family and my wealth.
