Three months passed, and the fires of war,
battle blazed on land and sea.
Raging on land and sea, still roar.

And the night of war fell and lingered until
The night of battle grew long and drear,
we thought death had uprooted dawn from it.
We thought death had rooted out the morn.

And the Unionists displayed guile in it—
The Ottomans feigned neutrality,
guile that deceived the Allied statesmen.
Deceiving the Allies most vilely.

They schemed against them and said, 'We have adhered to
They plotted and said, "We're obliged to be
a neutrality from which we see no escape.
Neutral, though this allows no flight."

In secret and openly, towards thee."

So they said; yet Enver had secretly
Thus they spoke, while Enver was preparing
approved their joining the Germans.
To join with Germans most eagerly.

And he rashly thrust his people into it,
Inciting them against the Allies,
and filled their breasts with rancor against the Allies.
Their hearts bitter enmity.

And they roused the bear, so upon them poured
So they provoked the bear, and down upon them
its legions from the Caucasus in torrents.
Came his legions furiously.

And a war of repeated battles raged between them,
A grueling war ensued between them,
its course alternating between flow and ebb.
Its tides ebbing and flowing unceasingly.

While Enver hoped for victory,
behold, the fates had looked at him askance.
Fate looked at him disdainfully.

His army suffered a terrible rout,
so dreadful that afterward it found no recovery.
No remedy could mend them speedily.

Those whom battle did not kill
and whose throat the Russians' arrow had missed,
Perished from Russian arrows certainly.

Some starved, some suffered miserable thirst,
and hunger he could not endure.
No patience could succor them utterly.

Those whom these plagues did not drive away

Were taken by typhus fever, expiring miserably.
