1. رأت دولة النمسا التقادير سائره

    على مشتهاها وهي بالروس ظافره

    The Austrian state saw fate proceeding

    according to its wishes, as it triumphed over the Russians.

  2. توهمت النصر الذي نيل أنه

    على يدها مع أنها عنهُ قاصره

    It fancied that the victory won had come

    by its own hand, though it was unequal to it.

  3. وقد نسيت تعضيد المانيا التي

    على روسيا كانت لها هي ناصره

    And it had forgotten the support of Germany, which

    had itself supported it against Russia.

  4. وظنت على ايطاليا الكر ممكناً

    فكرت تمنى النفس بالنصر باشره

    And it thought an attack on Italy possible,

    so it charged, promising itself victory, rejoicing.

  5. ولكن جيوش الروس كانت تأهبت

    وصارت على استئنافها الحرب قادره

    But the Russian armies had made ready,

    and were able to resume the war.

  6. فهبت لها من كل حدب وازمعت

    على البطش بالنمسا اليه مبادره

    So they surged against it from every height and resolved

    to strike Austria fiercely, hastening to do so.

  7. وكان برسيلوف الشهير يقودها

    فكرت سيوف العزم والفتك شاهره

    And the famed Brusilov was leading them,

    so they charged, brandishing the swords of resolve and slaughter.

  8. وشنَّت على الاعداءِ أصدق غارةٍ

    مُضعضعةً منها قواها وقاهره

    And they launched a most determined raid upon the enemy,

    shattering its forces and overpowering them.

  9. وكالت صفوف النمسويين ضربة

    بها انقطعت أوصالها متناثره

    And they dealt the Austrian ranks a blow

    that left their limbs severed and scattered.

  10. وردَّت على الاعقاب من أرض روسيا

    طلائعها منكودة الجد عاثره

    And they drove back on their heels from Russian soil

    Austria's vanguards, luckless and stumbling.

  11. تفرُّ وبرسيلوف يُنضي وراءَها

    ركائب جُردٍ بالفوارس طائره

    They flee, while behind them Brusilov exhausts

    sleek steeds, flying with their riders.

  12. يشدُّ عليها بالطراد مغادراً

    عزائمها من وطأة الضغط خائره

    He charges upon them in pursuit, leaving

    their resolve faltering under the weight of pressure.

  13. تحاول بالفر النجاةَ من الردى

    فلا تجدُ المنجى فترتد حائره

    They seek through flight to escape from death,

    but find no refuge and turn back bewildered.

  14. ولما رأت انَّ النجاة تعذرت

    وان سراياها الى الهلك صائرة

    And when it saw that escape had become impossible,

    and that its detachments were heading for destruction,

  15. وأن اليها كيدها لمصوبٌ

    وأن عليها الدائرات لدائره

    and that its own plotting was aimed back at itself,

    and that the turns of fortune were turning against it,

  16. وان كماة الروس تغشى غليسيا

    عليها لو التدويخ والفتح ناشره

    and that Russia's champions were sweeping over Galicia,

    unfurling above it the banner of subjugation and conquest,

  17. وتحتل فيها أشهر المدن والقرى

    لها فرق الغازين كالسيل غامرة

    and occupying its most renowned cities and villages,

    the invaders' divisions engulfing it like a torrent,

  18. لأنهارها مجتازةً وحصونها

    مقوضةً حتى المضايق عابره

    its rivers crossed, and its fortresses

    demolished, even the narrow passes traversed,

  19. ولبت نداء الآمرين لها بأن

    تدين بتسليم الى الروسِ صاغرة

    and it heeded the call of those commanding it

    to submit in humble surrender to the Russians,

  20. فسلم منها في ثلثة أشهرٍ

    جماهير كانت بالحياة مقامره

    then, within three months, there surrendered from its ranks

    multitudes who had been gambling with their lives.

  21. ومجموعها بالعد عشرون فرقةً

    لها روسيا في ساحة الحرب آسره

    And their total count was twenty divisions,

    which Russia held captive on the battlefield.

  22. وذلك نصرٌ رنَّ في الارض ذكرهُ

    وسكان روسيا تهادوا بشائره

    And that was a victory whose fame resounded throughout the earth,

    and Russia's people exchanged its glad tidings as gifts.
