صَبَحنا الحَيرَةَ الروحاءَ خَيلاً

صَبَحنا الحَيرَةَ الروحاءَ خَيلاً

وَرَجلاً فَوقَ اِثباجِ الرِكابِ

وَرَجلاً فَوقَ اِثباجِ الرِكابِ

We came upon spacious al-Hirah at dawn with cavalry,

And foot soldiers atop the backs of riding camels.

حَضَرنا في نواحيها قُصوراً

حَضَرنا في نواحيها قُصوراً

مُشَرَّعَةً كَأَضراسِ الكِلابِ

مُشَرَّعَةً كَأَضراسِ الكِلابِ

We came upon palaces in its quarters,

Jutting up like the molars of dogs.

فَبادوا بِالعَريبِ وَلَم يُحاموا

فَبادوا بِالعَريبِ وَلَم يُحاموا

فَقُلنا دونَكُم فِعلَ الغرابِ

فَقُلنا دونَكُم فِعلَ الغرابِ

Then they proclaimed themselves Arabs and offered no defense.

So we said, "Do as the crow does."

فَقالوا بَل نُريدُ الخُرجَ حَتّى

فَقالوا بَل نُريدُ الخُرجَ حَتّى

تَزولَ الراسِياتُ مِنَ الظِرابِ

تَزولَ الراسِياتُ مِنَ الظِرابِ

Then they said, "Rather, we choose tribute, until

The firmly rooted heights among the rocky hills disappear."

صَدَفنا عَنهُم لَمّا اِتَّقونا

صَدَفنا عَنهُم لَمّا اِتَّقونا

وَأُبنا حَيثُ أُبنا بِالنِهابِ

وَأُبنا حَيثُ أُبنا بِالنِهابِ

We turned away from them when they shielded themselves from us,

And returned whither we returned, with plunder.
