إِلى كِسرى فَوافَقَها رِجالا
We brought the horses from the flanks of Niq
We brought the horses from pleasant valleys
to Kisra, who met them with men.
To Ctesiphon, where valiant men awaited

وَبِالحَنَوينِ أَيّاماً طِوالا
They left them sorrow at al-Aqsam,
Leaving behind their homes with longing
and at al-Hanawayn, for long days.
And days of separation, long and trying

تُبَكّي كُلَّما رأتِ الهِلالا
And in Persia we left a mourning woman,
A caller in Fars bid us depart
who makes others weep whenever she sees the crescent moon.
Crying each time the crescent moon was sighted

We killed Rustam and his sons by force;

the horses stir up the sands over them.
Our horses kicking up the sand, excited

And al-Birzan fled and offered no defense,
Bērzān fled, unprotected, full of dread
and was a calamity to his battalion.
His troops routed, destiny decided

فِئاماًmultitudes ماnot يُريدونَthey wish اِرتِحالاًdeparture
فِئاماً ما يُريدونَ اِرتِحالاً
We left some of them where we met—
Where we met them, we left only some
multitudes with no wish to depart.
Not keen to quickly pack up and be moving

And al-Hurmuzan was saved by fear for his life,
The Hormuzans escaped to save their souls
and by the galloping of horses bearing him swiftly onward.
Our swift steeds galloping, swiftly proving
