Tell Abū Ḥafṣ that our forces
have been routed, and that we are encamped at al-Lisān,
بِخَيلٍwith horses عَلَيهاupon them الرازِحونَthe weary مُثولُstanding upright
فَإِنّاfor we وَإِنeven though كُنّاwe were شِهاباًa meteor مُسَلَّطاًunleashed
with horses bearing the weary upright.
For though we were a meteor unleashed,
بُليناwe were tried بِجَبّارٍby a giant أَلَفَّmassive صَؤولِfierce in attack
صَبَرناwe stood firm وَكانَand was الصَبرُsteadfastness أَنجىsafest مَغَبَّةٍin outcome
we were tried by a massive giant, fierce in attack.
We stood firm—and steadfastness was safest in the end—
بِأَسيافِناwith our swords وَالدائِراتُwhile calamities تَجولُswirled around
with our swords, while calamities swirled around.
