قالَتshe said تُعاتُبُنيreproaching me عِرسيmy wife وَتَسأَلُنيand asking me
أَينَwhere الدَراهِمُthe dirhams عَنّاaway from us وَالدَنانيرُand the dinars
My wife spoke, reproaching me and asking:
"Where have our dirhams and dinars gone?"
فَقُلتُso I said أَنفَقتُهاI spent them وَاللَهُand God يُخلِفُهاwill replace them
وَالدَهرُand time ذوhaving مَرَّةٍa turn عُسرٌhardship وَمَيسورُand ease
So I said, "I spent them, and God will replace them;
and time has its turns—hardship and ease.
إِنif يَرزُقِprovides for اللَهُGod أَعدائيmy enemies فَقَدthen already رُزِقَتwere given sustenance
مِنfrom قَبلِهِمbefore them فيin مَراعيهاtheir pastures الخَنازيرُthe pigs
If God provides for my enemies, sustenance was already given
before them to the pigs in their pastures."
قالَتshe said فَرِزقُكَthen your livelihood رِرقٌlivelihood (apparently intended: رِزقٌ) غَيرُnot مُتَّسِعٍample
وَماand not لَديكَin your possession مِنَof الخَيراتِgood things قِطميرُa date-stone's thin skin
She said, "Then your livelihood is far from abundant,
and of good things you possess not even a date-stone's thin skin.
وَقَدand indeed رَضيتَyou have been content بِأَنwith the fact that تَحياyou live عَلىon رَمَقٍbare subsistence
يَوماًa day فَيَوماًthen another day كَماjust as تَحياlive العَصافيرُthe sparrows
And you have been content to live on bare subsistence,
day after day, as sparrows live."
