إِنif يَكُbe ذاthis الدَهرُthe age قَدalready أَضَرَّharmed بِناto us
مِنfrom غَيرِabsence of ذَحلٍa grudge فَرُبَّماthen at times نَفَعاit brought benefit
If this age has done us harm
Though time may have harmed us without return,
without a grudge, it has at times done us good.
Good fortune may yet come to us in turn.
أَبكيI weep عَلىfor ذَلِكَthat الزَمانِthe time وَلاand not
أَحسبُI think شَيئاًanything قَدalready فاتَhas passed مُرتَجَعاrecoverable
I weep for that time—and do not
I weep for days gone by beyond recall,
think anything that has passed can be regained—
Though naught, once lost, can ever more befall.
إِذwhen نَحنُwe فيin ظِلِّthe shade of نِعمَةٍa blessing سَلَفَتhas passed
كانَتwas لَهاto it كُلُّevery نِعمَةٍblessing تَبَعاsubordinate
when we were in the shade of a blessing now gone,
While we enjoy blessings past days have lent,
to which every other blessing was subordinate.
Each present blessing shall more blessings send.
