And what do you know of a stubborn horse?

And what do you know of bearing arms?

And what do you know of an aged man

Whom time has turned from the path of merriment?

So I swear, had I ridden the bay for a day

And its night, until the brightness of morning,

Then I would surely have [looked] at a place on you

Like a threadbare mantle or the marks of wounds.

I passed by women wearing perfume,

Like dawn’s light or eggs in ostrich nests,

On chestnut mules; [they captured] my heart

With their lovely coquetry and beautiful eyes.

So I asked, “Who are these gazelles?” They said, “A herd

Of Banu Riyah’s gazelles has appeared before you.”
