Ah, has news reached her, distant though she is,

when she asks, or wishes to inquire,

    that with al-Nāʿiṭī we lead

shaggy, gaunt mounts complaining of exhaustion?

Rapid trotting and long night journeys have worn them down,

so by morning they are sunken-eyed and emaciated from that.

When they descend with us into an open plain,

    and cross mountains after mountains,

and the necklaces about their necks sway,

and they leave shoes on every stretch of rugged ground—

then indeed my cousin guarantees them

a raid that makes them drop their young.
