O heart obedient to desire,
How has far-off yearning assailed you?

You remember Juml, and whenever she goes far away,
Your yearning heart flies apart in fragments.

Why not desist and become a man
Whom a guide and a counselor can restrain?

Why do you not abandon youthful folly,
Though unmistakable gray has covered you?

So anyone who forbids you to love her
You have come to see as nothing but a secret foe.

From me, nor stray far from my liver.

In earnest, even when the jester jests.

Then, indeed, my pursuit of you has been long;
I strive, and the best work is that which succeeds.

Indeed, I have discerned a noble man,
Whose praiser speaks the truth in praising him.

The crest of al-ʿAnbar—so I chose him;
And a worthy man may raise another up.

Bright-browed, a generous lord; my thought of him
Is that my praise will find reward with him.

Sulaym, you are no base fellow, nor
Does your censure reach me at morn or eve.

You have been given my affection and my praise together,
And a friendship weighty in the balance.

I am at peace with those you make peace with; and whomever
You oppose, I become his adversary, locking horns.

On his head and upon his nose
Is a visible brand of my vengeance.

لِم يورِ فيها زَندَهُ القادِحُ
How fine a young man of the clan you are, on a night
When the fire-striker draws no flame from his fire-stick,
وَراحَand returned بِالشَولِwith the dry-uddered she-camels إِلىto أَهلِهاtheir owners

And back with the dry-uddered she-camels to their owners comes
A grim-faced man, their chins covered in dust;

فَاِنجَحَرَ القابِسُ وَالنابِحُ
And the wind blows from al-Shām,
So the fire-seeker and the barking dog retreat to their holes.
قَدindeed عَلِمَhas known الحَيُّthe clan إِذاwhen أَمحَلواthey suffer drought

أَنَّكَthat you رَفّادٌa lavish provider لَهُمfor them مانِحُa giver

The clan well knows, when drought befalls them,
That you are their generous supporter and giver,

On the night of grudged hospitality, when
No one offers milk at dusk or dawn.

So the guest’s due is acknowledged;
At your doors is one who opens for him.

And the horses well know, on the day of battle,
That you defend them from its embers.
