جَزىmay ... requite اللَهُGod إِبراهيمَIbrahim عَنon behalf of أَهلِthe people of مِصرِهِhis city
جَزاءَthe recompense of اِمرِئٍa man عَنaway from وِجهَةِthe direction of الحَقِّtruth ناكِبِturning aside
May God requite Ibrahim on behalf of his city's people,
with the recompense of a man who turns aside from the path of truth.
سَماhe advanced بِالقَناwith spears مِنfrom أَرضِthe land of ساباطَSabat مُرقِلاًhastening
إِلىtoward المَوتِdeath إرِقالَthe swift trot of الجِمالِcamels المَصاعِبِunbroken
He advanced with spears from the land of Sabat, hastening
toward death at the swift trot of unbroken camels.
فَصَبَّthen he poured عَلىupon الأَحياءِthe clans مِنfrom صَوبِthe downpour of وَدقِهِhis rain
شَآبيبَshowers of مَوتٍdeath عُقِّبَتwere followed بِالخَرائِبِby ruins
Then upon the clans he poured, from his driving rain,
showers of death, followed by devastation.
فَأَضحىthen ... became اِبنُthe son of رِبعِيٍّRib‘i قَتيلاًslain مُجَدَّلاًfelled to the ground
كَأَنas though لَمnot يُقاتِلhe fought مَرَّةًonce وَيُحارِبِand waged war
Then Ibn Rib‘i lay slain, felled to the ground,
as though he had never once fought or waged war.
فَأَمّاand as for أَبوfather of إِسحاقَIshaq فَاِنصاعَthen he turned سائِراًmarching
إِلىtoward عَسكَرَيهِمtheir two armies بِالقَناwith spears وَالكَتائِبِand battalions
As for Abu Ishaq, he turned and marched
toward their two armies with spears and battalions.
فَلَمّاthen when اِلتَقَيناwe met بِالسَبيعِat al-Sabi‘ وَأَنسَلواand they rushed
إِلَيناtoward us ضَربَناwe struck هامَهُمtheir heads بِالقَواضِبِwith sharp swords
Then, when we met at al-Sabi‘ and they rushed
toward us, we struck their heads with sharp swords.
فَماthen nothing راعَناstartled us إِلّاexcept شِبامٌShibam تَحُسُّناcutting us down
بِأَسيافِهاwith its swords لاnot أُسقِيَتmay it be watered صَوبَthe downpour of هاضِبِa rain-bearing cloud
Nothing startled us then but Shibam, cutting us down
with its swords—may no rain cloud's downpour ever water it!
فَقُتِّلَthen were slaughtered مِنfrom among أَشرافِناour nobles مَحالِهِمtheir encampments
عَصائِبُbands مِنهُمof them أُردِفَتwere followed بِعَصائِبِby bands
Then some of our nobles were slaughtered at their camps—
bands of them, each followed by another band.
فَكَمand how many مِنof كَمِيٍّan armored warrior قَدindeed أَبارَتdestroyed سُيوفُهُمtheir swords
إِلىto اللَهِGod أَشكوI lament رُزءَthe grievous loss of تِلكَthose المَصائِبِcalamities
And how many an armored warrior their swords have slain!
To God I lament the loss those calamities brought.
أَيَقتُلُناdoes ... kill us? المُختارُal-Mukhtar ظُلماًunjustly بِكُفرِهِbecause of his unbelief
فَياso, O لَكَfor you دَهراًan age مُرصِداًlying in wait بِالعَجائِبِwith wonders
Does al-Mukhtar kill us unjustly out of his unbelief?
Ah, what an age you are, lying in wait with wonders!
