أَتانِيَhas reached me عَنconcerning مَروانَMarwan بِالغَيبِby hearsay أَنَّهُthat he
أَتانِيَ عَن مَروانَ بِالغَيبِ أَنَّهُ
مُقيدٌexacting in retribution دَميmy blood أَوor قاطِعٌcutting مِنfrom لِسانِياmy tongue
مُقيدٌ دَمي أَو قاطِعٌ مِن لِسانِيا
Word reached me secretly about Marwan: that he
Word has reached me of Marwan, by hearsay, that he
means to take my blood—or cut out my tongue.
will take my life in retribution or cut away part of my tongue.
وَإِنَّكَand indeed you إِنif تَسبِقَact first إِلَيَّtoward me بِفِعلَةٍwith a deed
وَإِنَّكَ إِن تَسبِقَ إِلَيَّ بِفِعلَةٍ
تَسوءُgrieves الصَديقَthe friend أَوor تَسُرُّgladdens الأَعادِياthe enemies
تَسوءُ الصَديقَ أَو تَسُرُّ الأَعادِيا
And if you forestall me with some deed
And indeed, if you first act against me with a deed
that grieves a friend or gladdens enemies,
that grieves a friend or gladdens enemies,
تَجِدyou will find بَطَلاًa hero شاكيfully equipped with السِلاحِweapons مُجَرِّباًseasoned
تَجِد بَطَلاً شاكي السِلاحِ مُجَرِّباً
تَفادىkeep clear أُسودُlions الغابِof the forest مِنهُfrom him تَفادِياutter avoidance
تَفادى أُسودُ الغابِ مِنهُ تَفادِيا
you will find a hero, fully armed and seasoned—
you will find a hero, fully armed and seasoned,
from whom the lions of the thicket recoil and flee.
from whom the lions of the forest keep well clear.
