رَأَيتُI found ثَناءَpraise الناسِof the people بِالقَولِin words طَيِّباًpleasing
عَلَيكَof you وَقالواand they said ماجِدٌa noble man وَاِبنُand son of ماجِدِa noble man
I found the people's spoken praise pleasing—
I saw people praising you with pleasant words
Their praise of you; they said, 'A noble man, and the son of a noble man.'
And they said, glorious and son of the glorious
بَنيO sons of الحارِثِal-Harith السامينَaspiring لِلمَجدِto glory إِنَّكُمindeed you

O sons of al-Harith, aspiring to glory, indeed you
O sons of Al-Harith, eminent in glory, you
Have built an edifice that will not perish.
Have built a lasting monument

فَإِنfor if يَكُbe عُتّابٌUttab مَضىhas gone لِسَبيلِهِon his way
فَماthen not ماتَhas died مَنwhoever يَبقىremains لَهُfor him مِثلُthe like of خالِدِKhalid
For if Uttab has gone his way,
If Utba has passed away following his path
Then he who leaves behind one like Khalid has not died.
One like Khalid does not die if his like remains
