    متى ما يُحكّم فهو بالحق صَادِعُ

    I am al-Saltani, whom you already know;

    Whenever he is appointed arbiter, he proclaims the truth.

    وإني لَبِا لفَصلِ المُبيِّن قاطعُ

    Tamim came to me when its judges were afraid;

    And I indeed settle matters with clear, decisive judgment.

    Just as al-A‘sha made the ruling concerning ‘Amir binding,

    Tamim has no appeal against my judgment.

    وليس لحكمي آخر الدهر راجعُ

    Nor did al-A‘sha reverse the ruling concerning Ja‘far;

    And none shall reverse my judgment to the end of time.

    فهل أنت للحكم المُبين سامِعُ

    I shall judge between them without injustice;

    Will you, then, heed the clear judgment?

    وليس له في المدح منهم منافعُ

    The judgment of a man who does not fear their abuse,

    And who gains no benefit from their praise;

    The judgment of a man who takes no bribe in arbitration,

    When bribes and greed sway the judge.

    ولا تَجزعا وليرضَ بالحق قانعُ

    If you two have appointed me arbiter, then listen silently;

    And do not be distressed; let the contented accept the truth.

    وللحق بين الناس راضٍ وجازعُ

    Whether you two are pleased or distressed, I will not release you from my verdict;

    Among people, some accept the truth and some resent it.

    فإن أنا لم أعدلْ فقل أنت ضالعُ

    So I swear I shall not fall short of justice between them;

    And if I do not judge fairly, then say: “You are crooked.”

    Even if the two Hanzalis share one sea,

    Its whales and frogs are not equal.

    وما يستوي شُمُّ الذُّرا والأكارعُ

    Nor are a spear’s head and its butt-spike equal;

    Nor are lofty summits equal to feet.

    وما تستوي في الكفِّ منك الأصابعُ

    Nor are a bird’s tail feathers like its foremost wing feathers and plumage;

    Nor are the fingers of your hand equal.

    وبالمجد تحظى دَرِامٌ والأقارعُ

    Behold, Kulayb wins esteem only through its poetry;

    Through glory, Darim and al-Aqari‘ win esteem.

    وللأذنابُ قِدماً للرؤوس توابعُ

    Among them are heads whose lead shows the way;

    And indeed, tails have always followed heads.

    ولكنّ علتهُ الباذخات الفَوارعُ

    I see that al-Khatafa’s poetry has surpassed al-Farazdaq’s;

    Yet lofty, towering heights have overtopped him.

    ولكن علتهُ الباذخاتُ الفوارعُ

    Jarir is the more unyielding of the two poets;

    Yet lofty, towering heights have overtopped him.

    And what enhances al-Farazdaq’s poetry is that

    He has lofty eminence that raises one of lowly station.

    وتلقاه رثاً غِمدهُ وهو قاطعُ

    A blunt sword may be praised for its scabbard;

    And you may find one with a shabby sheath, yet keen of edge.

    Al-Farazdaq implores me for support after

    Thunderbolts from Jarir have assailed him relentlessly.

    So I said to him: I, in supporting you, am like one

    Who reattaches a nose that mutilators have severed.

    And Kulayb said: “We have surpassed you in honor.”

    So I told her: “The paths to the heights are barred to you.”
