O Zumayl, if I am to repay you,
My friend, if I have wronged you
I shall turn on you; even if you flee, you will not outrun me.
I turn against you, and if you flee I do not outpace

I am a man whose enmity men suffer,
I am a man whom men find hostile
as riding camels suffer from blue flies.
Yet travelers find gentler than blue flies

Do not think me like a man you encountered
Think not of me as a man you chanced upon
in a deserted place and then scratched with your elbow.
Whom you grazed with your elbow passing by

I am a man who wins, when I contend with you,
I am a man who is truest when I face you
the race’s prize-reeds; and whatever I wish, I gnaw bare.
Cane-slim yet I sweat not at the contest

O Zuml, if I become your driver,
O friend if I drive for you
you will run on your two legs for safety—and catch up!
My legs race toward justice and truth
