سنام ولا في ذروة المجد غارب

They say, “Sons of the camel”—yet it has

They say, “Sons of the camel”—yet it has no

no hump, nor any withers at glory’s summit.

تمنيت وذاكم من سفاهة رأيها

تمنيت وذاكم من سفاهة رأيها

لا هجوها لما هجتني محارب

لا هجوها لما هجتني محارب

I wished—and that sprang from the folly of her judgment—

I wished—and that stems from the folly of her judgment—

to lampoon her when Muḥārib lampooned me.

not to satirize her when Muharib satirized me.

معاذ الهي انن بقبيلتي

معاذ الهي انن بقبيلتي

ونفسي عن ذاك المقام لراغب

ونفسي عن ذاك المقام لراغب

God forbid—[the intervening wording is unclear]—with my tribe;

I seek refuge in my God—[unclear wording] concerning my tribe;

and my soul longs to be far from that station.

and my soul is indeed averse to that station.
