يهيج الهوى من بين تلك المنازلِ
Ah, greet a dwelling-site on the opposite valley-side,
Behold a beloved quarter with opposing ruins
It stirs love from among those dwellings.
Where passion is stirred amid those dwellings

على مستهام قلبه غير ذاهلِ
It stirs the love once felt in youthful days long past,
Stirred by one who was of the past youth
In a lovesick man whose heart has not forgotten.
In his heart not heedless of its fervor

He is enraptured by the memory of beautiful women, and his concern
Yearning for the singers and their songs
Is the pursuit of youthful passion in his wavering folly.
Youths of past days lost in swaying reverie

But she resembled one, a graceful gazelle

One of the fair-skinned women, languid, as though her speech
Moving slowly as if her whispered speech
Were the bees’ harvest—slender-waisted, with silent anklets.
Was the gentle hum of bees among date spadices

Widows among women at the foot of al-ʿAna.
Among other women, widowed and forlorn
