Whose ruined campsite at al-Raqmatayn has stirred my sorrow?
And the hands of decay ravaged it, so it came to resemble me.
وَقَفتُI stood بِهِbeside it وَالشَوقُwhile longing يَكتُبُwrites أَسطُراًlines

بِأَقلامِwith the pens of دَمعيmy tears فيin رُسومِthe tracings of جَنانيmy heart
I stood beside it while longing wrote lines
With the pens of my tears in the tracings of my heart.
أُسائِلُهُI question it عَنabout عَبلَةٍAbla فَأَجابَنيthen he answered me
غُرابٌa raven بِهِin him ماwhat بيin me مِنَof الهَيَمانِlovesick longing
I questioned it about Abla, and was answered
By a raven with the same lovesick longing as mine.
يَنوحُhe mourns عَلىover إِلفٍa mate لَهُof his وَإِذاand when شَكاhe laments
شَكاhe laments بِنَحيبٍwith sobbing لاnot بِنُطقِwith the speech of لِسانِa tongue
He mourns his mate, and when he laments,
He laments with sobbing, not with a tongue's speech.
وَيَندُبُand he wails مِنfrom فَرطِan excess of الجَوىheartache فَأَجَبتُهُso I answered him

And he wails from overwhelming heartache, so I answered him
With the anguish of a heart forever pounding.
أَلاAh! ياO غُرابَraven البَينِparting لَوif كُنتَyou were صاحِبيmy companion
قَطَعناwe would traverse بِلادَlands of اللَهِGod بِالدَوَرانِby roaming about
Ah, O raven of parting, if you were my companion,
We would traverse God's lands, roaming about.
عَسىperhaps أَنthat نَرىwe see مِنfrom نَحوِthe direction of عَبلَةَAbla مُخبِراًsomeone bringing news
بِأَيَّةِin what أَرضٍland أَوor بِأَيِّin what مَكانِplace
Perhaps we might see someone from Abla's direction who could tell us
In what land, or in what place, she is.
وَقَدand indeed هَتَفَتcalled out فيin جُنحِthe darkness of لَيلٍnight حَمامَةٌa dove
مُغَرَّدِةٌsinging تَشكوshe laments صُروفَvicissitudes of زَمانِtime
And a dove called out in the darkness of night,
Singing, lamenting the vicissitudes of time.
فَقُلتُso I said لَهاto her لَوif كُنتِyou were مِثليlike me حَزينَةًsorrowful
بَكَيتِyou would weep بِدَمعٍwith tears زائِدِabundant in الهَمَلانِflowing
So I said to her: if you were sorrowful like me,
You would weep with tears streaming profusely,
وَماand not كُنتِyou would be فيamong دَوحٍgreat trees تَميسُsway غُصونُهُits branches
وَلاnor خُضِبَتwould be dyed رِجلاكِyour two feet أَحمَرَred قانيdeep crimson
And you would not be among great trees whose branches sway,
Nor would your feet be dyed a deep crimson.
أَياO عَبلَAbla لَوif أَنَّthat الخَيالَthe phantom يَزورُنيvisits me
عَلىin كُلِّevery شَهرٍmonth مَرَّةًonce لَكَفانيit would surely suffice for me
O Abla, if your phantom visited me
Once each month, that would suffice for me.
لَئِنeven if غِبتِyou are absent عَنfrom عَينَيَّmy eyes ياO اِبنَةَdaughter of مالِكٍMalik

Even if you are absent from my eyes, O daughter of Malik,
Yet your form is with me, clear to my sight.
غَداًtomorrow تُصبِحُwill be الأَعداءُthe enemies بَينَamong بُيوتِكُمyour houses

Tomorrow the enemies will be among your houses,
Biting all their fingertips out of grief.
فَلاso do not تَحسَبواthink أَنَّthat الجُيوشَthe armies تَرُدُّنيturn me back
إِذاwhen جُلتُI range فيthrough أَكنافِكُمyour quarters بِحِصانيon my stallion
So do not think that armies will turn me back,
When I range through your quarters on my stallion.

Let death come to me in whatever form
It comes, so I may show it my stance and my spear-thrusts.
