When idle folk busy themselves with the cup,

Or drink it in the evening between a priest and a deacon,

I make my sleeping-place beneath the shadow of a dust cloud,

And a skull's shell my cup of wine.

And my sword's sound is my delight, and its gleam—

When the horizon's face turns black with dust—is my torch.

And if the lions of al-Shara roar and close ranks,

I scatter them, while my thrusts outrun my breaths.

And whoever says I am black to disparage me,

I show him by my deeds that he is the greatest liar of all.

So go your way in safety, O daughter of Malik,

And do not turn toward despair after hope.

For if Death's form appeared to me, I would meet him

With a heart mighty in valor, like a firmly rooted mountain.
